Hello!  I am Kari Merritt, the ART teacher here at Broadmoor Elementary School. This is my 6th year here at Broadmoor Elementary School. My position is half time which gives me the opportunity to volunteer with the Kennedy Center Imagination Celebration and other professional organizations around the state. I am a member of the Colorado Arts and Education Association, which provides opportunity for art teachers in Colorado and neighboring states to meet and update our professional development and share teaching strategies and ideas. I will be going to the state conference which will be held in Breckenridge this year in October.
I believe that Art is an important part of a well rounded education, and many students thrive and are able to express themselves in my classroom in a way that is not always a part of the regular academic setting. It has been proven that children who have art in their lives on a regular basis, perform better in all of the other subject areas. All of my projects teach to the Visual Art Standards, and most reinforce core curriculum as well.
In my class, students will experience using a variety of media and techniques while incorporating art elements and concepts such as line, shape, texture, color, pattern, movement, etc, as well. Most importantly I encourage students to look at the world with an artistic view and use this knowledge to express themselves in a unique and individual way! I encourage parents to take your students to galleries and shows whenever possible, this will strengthen their learning in my classroom. I strive to get the students work out in public as much as opportunity allows. As well as the two art shows within the district, we have had work on display in the past at the public library and at Starbucks Coffee Company. I am always looking for new venues for this and welcome your input.
I am always on the lookout for supplies and you probably have many things at home that we can use in the art room. I constantly collect egg cartons, cottage cheese and large yogurt containers, small ice cream lids (like Ben and Jerry's), paper towel and toilet tissue rolls, and this year I am collecting old blue jeans, any size, for a watercolor project. Keep in mind that Art can be messy and it would be best if students did not wear their best clothing to school on art days. Feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns, my extension here at school is 18. Keep in mind that I am only here on art weeks most of the time. Music and art are taught in two week blocks for optimum learning. Here's to a fun filled creative year in ART!
