Welcome to the Broadmoor Library/Media Center
Mrs. Laura Soyk- Media Specialist
General Information
The library is a place where children come for instruction as well as for checking out books. The focus is not only on library skills, but on information literacy using multiple means of media as well.
Kindergarten, first and second graders come to the library for story time. Specific skills reviewed include characterization, predicting, retelling, sequencing, summarizing, rhyming and other areas of the reading and writing curriculum. A variety of genres are studied such as fairytales and fables, repetitive books, nursery rhymes, holiday books, wordless books, and poety.
Third, fourth, fifth, and sixth graders add to their base knowledge of the library by applying referencing skills including: using the Dewey Decimal System to locate books, working with glossaries and tables of contents, using dictionaries, encyclopedias, world almanacs, atlases and a thesaurus.
In addition to the above skills, Broadmoor students are given the tools and training in order to integrate technology into their units of study. The media specialist works integrally with the staff to create opportunities in which technology supports student learning and understanding.
Thanks to a supportive community and several grant awards, Broadmoor's technology is growing. Below is a list of equipment available for student use:
•Networked computers
•1 mobile laptop cart and 1 computer lab
•Alpha Smarts (portable keyboards)
•Digital Cameras
•Scanners
•Video Cameras
•Educational Software
•Controlled Internet Access
