Art  K-6

Welcome back Canon students and welcome to all of our new families!  I look forward to another amazing year in art class.  Please visit this website often to see what your children are doing in art class.  On this page you will find descriptions of what the children are doing in art, along with visual images of the artists and/or cultures that we are studying.  You will also find information about up and coming art shows and extra credit information.  There is also a section explaining my grading philosophy.  Please feel free to come in and check out the art room or discuss any questions that you may have about the art program.

Sincerely,
Susan Foster

Extra Credit
Once a month I post an extra credit topic on the extra credit bulletin board in the art room.  The purpose of this project is for the children to use their creative minds at home. I am only giving a suggested topic and the children can run with it.  They can use any medium that they like.  For instance, they could use crayons, markers, paint, collage, build something that is 3-D, or use mixed media.  I am SO impressed with what the Canon kids have created in the past!!!  Please know that this is NOT a mandatory project and should be worked on only when the children have finished their class homework.  This is also an independent project---the children need to come up with their own ideas and create the project by themselves.  It is really just for fun and maybe it will get the kids away from the television for a while.

August--Create an artwork based on a fun activity you that you did this   summer.
September--Create a collage out of fall leaves.  You could also try texture rubbings with the leaves.
October--Create a portrait of someone in your family.  To make things interesting, maybe this person could be wearing a costume.
November--Create an abstract piece of art.
December--Let's do snow globes again!  Create a snow globe.  It could be 2-D or 3-D.
January--Create a snow scene on black paper (see me for the black paper).
February--Draw a picture of a personal invention.
March--Create a landscape picture with something out of the ordinary.  You could draw a mountain scene with monkeys snowboarding down the mountainside.
April--Create something out of recyclable items.  You could use tin cans, plastic bottles, newspaper etc.  No Glass Please!
May--Create an artwork based on something you want to do this summer.

Art Report Cards and Grading
Art is a personal journey and we all perform at different levels and abilities.  My grading philosophy is based on student participation, efforts, craftsmanship and behavior in art class.

Report Cards for Art come out at the end of the second semester and the fourth semester.  The report cards are based on the Colorado State Standards for Art.

The number “3” is the highest grade a student can receive. A “3” is earned if a student exceeds expectations.  I give 3’s to the children who go above and beyond my expectations for an art project.

The number “2” is a very good grade that students earn if they are meeting all of my expectations.  These students follow all of the rules and directions for each of the art projects.  They also produce artwork with quality craftsmanship.

The number “1” is a grade that is given to students who need improvement in art.  These students may have a difficult time following directions or staying on task.

I truly believe that ALL children can succeed in art even if art is not their passion or best subject.  Art is about using imagination, creativity and expressing one’s self.  If a student listens to and follows directions, takes their time to ensure a job well done, and expresses themselves through their art, they will earn a good grade in art.

                                                Sincerely,
                                                Susan Foster
