Welcome to Cañon Elementary Library Media Center
Mrs. Andrusyk, Media Specialist
Cañon's school library media center is located as the hub of the school. The Cañon media center houses a collection of resources organized and managed for the school's students and staff. Materials in the media center supplement the school's curriculum. There is an 8,000 item inventory in the Cañon Media Center. The key services of the media center include: hardcover books, paperback books, Newbery and Caldecott award winning books, newspapers, magazines, books on tape, iPods, videotapes, cds, and computer software. All these items are accessed by a computerized catalog and are available for circulation through the use of an automated check-out and check-in system.
Students at Cañon may check out materials as well as access information from computers and on-line catalogs and searches. The media center includes a mini computer lab with thirteen iMac computers, 10 wireless laptop computers, one networked color laser printer, one networked printer, two camcorders, two digital cameras, and a projection system.
The media program is a collaboration between the classroom teachers and the media specialist. It is the goal of the program to make our students self-directed learners, quality producers, and knowledge seekers.
Class times are flexible. Cañon students are taught to access information through the use of the electronic card catalogs, networks, CD-ROMs, reference materials, printed materials, and periodicals with the collaboration of the classroom teachers and the media specialist. .
Within the media center, is our video production lab, where our students write, produce and broadcast our CNN (Cañon Network News) newscast. Students use digital cameras, camcorders, and iMovie to present a weekly news show full of classroom events, special announcements, birthdays, weather forecasts, trivia contests, mystery locations, and a segment called "Take a Look Around Cañon."
