The number of language learners in United States schools has grown over 100% in the last twenty years while total enrollment in public schools has risen around 10%.
Language learners come to U.S. schools with a wide variety of languuage abilities and proficiencies.
It takes 4-10 years to reach total academic fluency in English. Students may speak the language very well, but need extensive help with school language (content area subjects).
We have over 25 students at CME who qualify as language learners.
They represent about 10 different languages.
Reading as little as 20 minutes each night can change reading ability for the better.
