General Information
HOSTS is a structured academic mentoring program for reading readiness. It was originally founded in 1971 by Bill Gibbons, a teacher in the Vancouver School District, in Vancouver, Washington.
HOSTS is a nationally validated program and is currently being used in hundreds of school districts throughout the United States. HOSTS provides individual help by using community adult and student-age volunteers to mentor children.
Grades
In HOSTS, each student's learning needs are carefully diagnosed and the student's strengths and areas to be developed are noted. An individual lesson plan is then designed by the HOSTS instructor for each student. The plans are placed in easy-to-use student folders that direct the mentor and the student as they spend time together in shared learning experiences.
In independent research studies, average gains of students in the HOSTS program often are more than twice the national average. The program has won most of the country's prestigious awards for language arts programs and has been designated as an exemplary model by the U.S. Department of Education. When used as recommended, HOSTS has had a profound effect on reducing problems of at-risk students. |
