A Message From the Principal
Ms. Lori Smith

Welcome to the Cheyenne Mountain Junior High website!  I am extremely proud to represent our school as principal.  Our students have consistently performed at very high levels when compared to other middle-level students throughout the state of Colorado.  Our school has a highly qualified and motivated staff that is dedicated to providing a rigorous, balanced, and varied curriculum to meet the individual needs of our students.  We also have tremendous cooperation and support from our community and parents.  These three components are the key factors making Cheyenne Mountain Junior High a Colorado School of Excellence for the past seven years!

As we pursue the 2007-2008 school year, our staff will be focusing on three school-wide curriculum goals: the short – constructed response (writing tool), non-fiction reading across the content areas, and higher-level questioning and critical thinking techniques across the content areas.  As a staff, we believe that by focusing on these three areas of curriculum we can continue to improve overall academic student achievement.  In addition, we will continue to model and reinforce the Positive Behavior Support Model (PBS) of behavior with all students.  This model clarifies school-wide expectations for students, utilizes positive reinforcements when expected behaviors are met, and creates a positive learning community for students and
staff.

Another priority this year is to continue to improve and refine our Response to Instruction (RtI)/Problem-Solving Team Process. Our overall goal is to embed research-based, instructional strategies into every classroom to differentiate learning for all students. Occasionally, however, some students may need more intensive intervention(s) and the school then will form an immediate partnership with parents.  Together, the PST team, the parents, and the student will determine further intervention strategies needed, monitor progress of those interventions, and meet regularly to assess the student’s ongoing need(s). We are very proud of the effectiveness of our team that is gauged by the measurable outcomes achieved by students.

Lastly, Cheyenne Mountain Junior High will always emphasize the sustained practice of self-advocacy.  We believe that the mastery of this skill is one of the most important to ensure students’ successful transition to the high school.  Another way that we will ensure successful transitions not only to high school but also from the elementary schools will be to regularly connect and articulate with both the primary and secondary level teachers to improve our articulated curriculum, determine and communicate best practices, and embrace the idea of continuous improvement at the junior high.

We are proud to be the mighty T-BIRDS - those who strive To Build Integrity, Responsibility, Determination, and Self-Advocacy! We look forward to the triumphs and challenges that this school year will bring!
