What’s Happening in the
Art Room This Month?

Kindergarten: Art is all around us.
We are studying the art of Marc Chagall. We will be creating a "Dreamscape" using imaginative color and images.

First Grade: Art tells a story.
We will read the Story Tar Beach by Faith Ringgold. The story explores the idea of imagining a place you can fly over. If you fly over it you can "own" it. We will be creating self portraits in a place we would like to "own".
Second Grade: Art Around the world.
We will study Middle Eastern Art this month. We will read The Librarian of Basra, a true story about an Iraqi librarian who saved thousands of books from being destroyed in the Iraq war. We will then discuss a movement of peace that is spreading in ght e middle east. Hamsa hands, a tradition in both Muslim and Jewish cultures, are being created as symbols of peace. We will create clay hamsa hands and decorate them with beautiful designs. Our hamsa hands will be a message of peace and a symbol of hope that our world will be a more peaceful place for all people.

Third Grade: Art brings communities together.

We have begun our Self Portrait project based on the work of artist Faith Ringgold. We will read Ringgold's book, Dinner at Aunt Connie's House. We will be creating patterned backgrounds and clothing to make our faces stand out. When we are finished, these portraits will show how important we all are as individuals and as a community in the 3rd grade.

Fourth Grade: Art is a visual language.
We are finishing up our schools (quality work takes a long time) and will be moving on to studying art of the Plains Indians.

Fifth Grade: Art reflects influence.
We are creating Mayan codex books. These accordion fold books will have our Mayan birthday and our initials translated into Mayan glyphs or writing. We will practice our watercolor skills while improving our observational drawing abilities.

Sixth Grade: Art reflects our common humanity throughout time.
We are continuing on through pre-history to the time of Stonehenge. We read he story Fee of the Meadow People. Fee goes through a rite of passage ceremony. We discussed how 6th grade is a big year with a very important rite of passage coming at the end of the year. The transition from elementary school to junior high is a powerful one. We will be thinking of the responsibilites they "carry" with them. These will be represented with nature symbols on either a cape or a shield. We will learn tricks to realistic drawing, shading and blending with oil pastels.
