1st Grade Information
Mrs. Lanphere/Mrs. Miller
Birthdays:
Your child may bring in birthday treats for his/her birthday.  We do birthday treats at 1:45.  If you’re unable to bring the treats in at this time you may send them with your child in the morning and we’ll save them for the afternoon.  Please send a note in your child’s planner the day before you plan to bring treats to remind the teacher.  Please don’t bring drinks in because we’re unable to have colored beverages in our rooms.

Book Orders:
We will try to send a book order home monthly.  You may pay with cash or check.  If writing a check make it out to Scholastic Book Clubs.  We will give you one week to return order and money if you choose to order.  This is a great opportunity to get books at a great price for your children. Our classroom also earns free books to build our library.

Classroom Management:
Each class uses a pulling card system.  Your child will always be given a warning before recess time is taken away.  If your child pulls enough cards you will be contacted with a letter written by your child explaining the behavior.  We ask that you sign the letter, discuss the behavior with your child and send it back to school.  The teacher will also talk with your child about their behavior and different choices they need to make.  Each day is a new day and your child can only miss up to one full recess for the day.

Field Experiences:
We will go on field experiences this year in 1st grade.  We try to do at least one for each science kit.  This is another volunteer opportunity however; siblings are not able to join us.  Notes, permission slips and reminders will always be sent home.  We can not allow your child to go on the field trip if a permission slip hasn’t been signed.

Lunch Money:
This is not required, but very helpful to your 1st grade teachers.  If your child is planning on eating multiple school lunches this year we strongly recommend that you pre-pay for your child.  This alleviates some of the chaos and time it takes to collect money each morning.  If your child is eating Dominoes pizza (Tuesdays and Thursdays), the money has to be paid separate from lunch money.

Newsletters:
We will make every effort to send a newsletter every two weeks.  The letter will include a summary of the weekly activities, and upcoming dates.

Pick-up:
The first part of the year we will walk your children out to the front entrance for pick-up.  You’re welcome to pick-up your child from outside the classroom doors or the side gate.  Keep in mind that if there isn’t an adult to pick them up from these places, we will walk them to the front for pick-up.  Please don’t tell your child to wait in the classroom or another location for pick-up because there is no supervision.  For safety reasons, we can not allow your child to cross the street and meet you.

Planners:
We try to write a planner message to you daily.  Please initial and read your child’s planner each night.  This is the quickest way for us to communicate to you. We  check them each morning, so feel free to write questions, comments or concerns.

Portfolios:
We asked you to bring in a binder for your child.  This will be used to make a portfolio of your child’s work throughout the year.  We will be collecting various work samples (especially writing) so keep this in mind when looking through the Thursday folders.  All work will be shown to you at conferences and then the portfolio will be sent home at the end of the year.

Snack:
We have snack from 10:05-10:15.  It’s optional to bring a snack.  If you choose to send a snack to school with your child please keep in mind the following:
*only one item
*make sure it’s healthy
*no beverages other than water
*Your child must be able to finish their snack in 10 minutes, so keep in mind the snack size.

Spelling Test:
We’ll begin spelling tests in September after testing.  Your child will be given a list of words on Monday and take a test on Friday.  Please help your child learn these words, at home during the week.  Bonus words are never taken for a grade, but we encourage your child to try them.  We will still have spelling tests if there are only four days of school that week, but will not if there are fewer than four.

Take Home Readers:
Your child will bring home books Monday thru Thursday nights.  Please have your child read to you and fill out the reading log that goes home each night.  Filling out the reading log helps us when conferencing with your child.  Take home readers are the majority of 1st grade homework, so it is very important to take the time to listen to the reading each night.  You should be spending 10-15 minutes reading each night, then increasing to 20 minutes, later in the year.  There are numerous factors to be considered before we change levels.  Some of the factors are: fluency, comprehension, number of words missed when reading a page, various books at that level can be read with success. This includes both fiction and non-fiction.

Thursday Folders:
We send Thursday folders home each week.  In the folders you will find your child’s work, 1st grade newsletter and school newsletter (when printed).   Please look inside the folder, sign the back and return it to school on Friday.
