SCIENCE
This year we will be using the three science kits listed below.

The Life Cycle of the Butterfly:  Students observe the life cycle of the
Painted Lady butterfly. Through their experiments, they begin to
understand the different stages of a butterfly’s life cycle.

Soils:  Students investigate the properties of three components: sand,
clay and humus, as well as their own local soil. They explore the
relationship between soil, roots and plants.

Balancing and Weighing:  Students expand their understanding of the
relationship between balance and weight. They begin to understand that
balance is affected by the amount of weight, the position of weight, and
the position of the fulcrum.

GEOGRAPHY
Geography will be integrated into all areas of our curricula.  It will include "Daily Geography" -- a format, which encourages students to use maps to locate features such as landforms and water bodies, natural and political boundaries, and capitals.
HISTORY
History, culture, and a variety of social studies topics will be discussed through literature. This will be a part of our language arts time as small groups read and discuss books from our non-fiction collection, and when I read to the entire class.

LANGUAGE ARTS

The second grade goal is to develop independent readers who will “use reading in a lifetime pursuit of learning enjoyment.” Children will read and respond to a variety of materials including:  selections from basal texts, award-winning literature, picture books, and novels. The balanced reading program will include reading aloud, shared reading, teacher reading, children reading, paired reading, tape-recorded reading, guided reading, and independent reading. Your child will be learning:

•       Decoding and phonics skills
•       Language study and grammar usage
•       Listening skills
•       Responding to literature
•       Speaking skills
•       Schema connections
•       Vocabulary
•       Poetry
•       Writing
•       Oral reading
•       Story structure
•       Comprehension strategies

WRITING
Children will experience regular opportunities for creative thinking and writing. Each student will keep a journal. Students will use a personal dictionary to help them with spelling. Children will be given opportunities to practice correct grammar and correct English usage. We will focus on paragraph construction and creative writing.

SPELLING
Our spelling program will be based on word families and spelling patterns. The word lists will be taken from the Scott Foresman Reading Street Program.

TECHNOLOGY

Students will use various computer programs to reinforce skills being taught in the classroom. Computers will also be used in our classroom to enhance various activities.
