5th Grade Classroom Procedures
All procedures listed below are subject to change at the discretion of the teacher.
Discipline
* Positive Behavior System
* Based on individual student
* Consequences that are effective for the student or appropriate for the infraction
* No set list of consequences because they are not always applicable or necessary
* If a behavior problem or infraction occurs:
o 1st occurrence – warning
o 2nd occurrence – consequence in class and conference with the student
o 3rd occurrence – call home by student or teacher, consequence decided by teacher and parents.
o 4th occurrence – student visits principal. A behavior contract may be used at this point.
Classroom Rules – Behavioral Expectations
1) Be Respectful and Responsible 4) Be Cooperative
2) Show Effort 5) Be Honest
3) Positive Attitude
Students are expected to follow school rules and adult directions; be prepared; and to behave in a manner that is safe, responsible, and respectful to themselves and others.
Classroom Organization
Homework – Students will have approximately 50 minutes of homework each night. Some assignments, such as Accelerated Reader and projects, may extend longer than one night. Students are expected to turn in all homework on time. Students will receive 2 homework passes per quarter that will allow them to “be human.” Passes will not transfer to the next quarter. If a student has a missed assignment, the pass will be sent home to inform parents about the missed assignment. The pass will have to be signed and returned. When both passes have been used, parents will be contacted to inform them that their child no longer has any homework passes. Any assignments that are not turned in on time, after the passes have been used, will go in the grade book as a zero.
At the end of the quarter, if the students have two unused passes, they can turn them in and will qualify for the 100% Club. Parents and students should refer to the student’s planner (and Ms. Dobler’s, Mrs. Ellerbusch’s, and Ms. House’s web page) for the most accurate homework assignments. The fifth grade teachers will review homework assignments with the students during the day. It is the student’s responsibility to copy the correct assignments into the planner.
Planners – Students are to use their planners for communication and organization. Time is given to fill them out each day. Homework and other important information will be recorded in the planners. It is expected that parents/guardians will check the child’s planner on a nightly basis. Ms. Dobler, Mrs. Ellerbusch, and Ms. House will check planners daily. It is the student’s responsibility to fill out the homework assignments correctly and bring it home for families to see.
Parent Communication - Parents should check their child’s planner (and Ms. Dobler’s, Mrs. Ellerbusch’s, and Ms. House’s web page) and discuss school daily with their child. Parents may contact Ms. Dobler, Mrs. Ellerbusch, and Ms. House at the school number or by email. If you desire a conference with Ms. Dobler, Mrs. Ellerbusch, or Ms. House, parents are requested to make an appointment with her at 527-0300 – Dobler: ext. 19, Ellerbusch: ext. 17, or House: ext. 18 or email us at dobler@cmsd12.org, ellerbusch@cmsd12.org, or house@cmsd12.org. All phone calls during the school day will be routed to the teacher’s voicemail. Teachers will return the call at the earliest available opportunity.
Missing and Late Assignments – Only two missing assignments per quarter will be accepted with a homework pass. Any assignments that are not turned in on time after the passes have been used will go in the grade book as a zero. Students are expected to complete all work for content knowledge.
Work missed during absences - Absent students will be given a grace period (1 day for each school day missed). If the work is not turned in on the “grace period” due date, then a homework pass must be used or a zero will be placed in the grade book.
Grading – The grading scale set by the district will be used for all assignments.
(Exceptions can be made at the discretion of the teacher.)
100% - 90% = A, 89% - 80% = B, 79% - 70% = C, 69% - 60% = D, 59% and below = F
Extra Credit – Students may earn extra credit ONLY in reading by completing additional AR tests at 80% or above.
Novel Selection – All students are required to have personal reading material at school every day. The reading material may be self-selected or with teacher assistance and approval. Reading material may come from the classroom, school, or personal libraries. Offensive or inappropriate material will not be allowed. Reading material should always be within the student’s reading range. (The only exception is if the student is striving to be in Battle of the Books with prior approval of the teacher.) This reading range will be given to the student during the first few weeks of school.
AR (Accelerated Reader) selections will be required during the school year. A test is completed in class on the computer when the child finishes an AR book. A test of 80% or above in the student’s reading range is due every 5 - 6 weeks. Students are required to read and complete activities in a whole class novel study. Reading may mean listening to a tape of the selection, reading it aloud with an adult or other student, or reading it alone. If a student wishes to write in a novel to take notes, the student will need to supply his/her own copy of the novel. AR due dates: Sept. 26, Nov. 7, Dec. 12, Jan. 23, Feb. 27, April 3, and May 8.

Questions
What if I forgot my supplies?
Be prepared. In the event you are not, you may borrow paper, pencils, or pens from Ms. Dobler, Mrs. Ellerbusch, or Ms. House. You need to write yourself a reminder note in the planner and bring your supplies the next day.
What if my pencil breaks? What if I’m thirsty?
You may sharpen your pencil or get a drink of water from the fountain in the classroom during work time … not while Ms. Dobler, Mrs. Ellerbusch, or Ms. House is talking with the class. You should have several pencils sharpened each morning – be prepared.
What should the heading of my papers look like?

Date
Subject
Assignment
What if I miss a day of school?
If possible, arrange to get your assignments ahead of time. If that is not possible, try to have someone bring your assignments home to you. Otherwise, a homework absence sheet will be on your desk when you return. YOU are responsible for turning in your assignments. (If you have been absent, there is no penalty for absent assignments unless turned in after the revised due date.) You have as many days as you were absent to make up the work. Example: You were absent Monday. You return on Tuesday and receive your assignments. The assignments are due Thursday morning. If a certain assignment has been assigned prior to your absence, and you are absent on the day that assignment is due … you are expected to turn the assignment in on the morning of your return. (Since you were aware of the due date … your absence is not an acceptable excuse for your work to be turned in late.)
What if I have to go to the bathroom?
Get permission before leaving the room for any reason, unless it is an emergency. Only one boy and one girl may use the restroom passes at a time. You may ask to leave the room when Ms. Dobler, Mrs. Ellerbusch, or Ms. House is not speaking, teaching, explaining directions, etc. Follow the procedure discussed in class when you “check out” and “check in.”
What should I do if I finish my work early?
You may silent read your AR novel in your reading range. You MUST have an AR book in your desk at all times.
What if I forget something in my backpack, in another room, or at home?
You may not go back to another room or into the hall during class time. Plan ahead. If you do not arrive to class with your homework, you may use a homework pass or receive a zero. Bring everything you will need for the day into the classroom. If you forget something, you will have to make do without it. If you forget your lunch or money, you may charge one from the cafeteria.
What if I need to use the phone?
Students may not use the classroom or office phone.
When are we dismissed?
Ms. Dobler, Mrs. Ellerbusch, and Ms. House dismiss the class to line up for Spanish, library, specials, lunch, and to go home. The teachers will escort the class to and from their destination. There are some bells as reminders. The bell does not dismiss you.
Why are our rules so strict?
The focus in our classroom is on LEARNING. We handle procedures quickly and efficiently so we can get back to learning as soon as possible.
