Mrs. Ellerbusch/Ms. Dobler/Ms. House
5th Grade

August 29, 2008
Dear Parents/Guardians:

Your child took the STAR reading test this week and has received his/her new reading range.  Your child is required to successfully PASS, with an 80% or higher, an AR (accelerated reading) test seven times this year.  I require all AR books to be in the child’s reading range.  For the September, November, and December tests, I require the AR novel to be worth two or more points in order to count.  If your child prefers non-fiction books, I will allow him/her to pass two (1-point) non-fiction AR tests to count for his/her two points.  Book point values are indicated in the AR notebooks in the PVE library, in the library catalog link on PVE’s website, and in my classroom.  All students will take the STAR reading test again in December to determine a new reading range prior to the winter vacation.  For the January, February, April, and May tests, I require the AR book to be worth 3 or more points in order to count.  If your child prefers non-fiction books, I will allow him/her to pass three (1-point) non-fiction AR tests to count for his/her three points.  The book(s) chosen for the AR test must be new to your child.  Books that have been read to your child or that he/she has read in previous years are not permitted.  Students are also not permitted to read a novel that has been made into a major motion picture (i.e. Holes, Harry Potter movies, Bridge to Terabithia, etc.)  All AR tests need to be taken during the school day in the presence of a fifth grade teacher.  Students are responsible for checking to make sure PVE has an AR test for the novel or non-fiction books they have chosen.  I have gone over all of these rules thoroughly in class; however, if you or your child is unsure if his/her book will count or have any further questions, please do not hesitate to call or email me.
