Science Matters:
Science Matters is a science group that meets after school with trained teachers on science concepts.  Below is the list of this years clulbs and the age levels that are appropriate for the club.  Applications to join Science Matters will go home with students the week of August 25.  The Application deadline for the fall club, Gear It Up, is due September 19.

GEAR IT UP! (K-6)
Spring into action with our first club of the school year! We’ll learn how to harness the natural forces that make machines tick, from skateboards to giant cranes.  Build a catapult, experiment with hydraulics—even invent your own machine as we learn the laws of motion.  So much physics fun, it will make your head spin!

Lights, Camera, Action! (3rd – 5th Grades)
Take one!  Come be directed in the science behind major motion picture productions!  Learn the physics behind outrageous stunts, special effects, photography and animation.  This club will be one tough act to follow, so don’t miss it.  Now, that’s a wrap!

POP! BANG! FIZZ! CHEMISTRY (K-6)
A little of this, a little of that, some wild reactions is where it’s at!  You won’t believe our mixing fun can teach some science before it’s done.  With a pop, or a bang, or even some fizz, you have just become a chemistry whiz!

OUTBACK EXPEDITION (K-6)
G-day Mates!~ We’re going Down Under on a fascinating expedition.~ Strap on your backpack, grab your compass, (we’ll supply both) while we trek Australia from coast to coast. ~~We will be discovering their modern day habits, incredible aboriginal culture, and the amazing animals from crocs to kangaroos!~ You’ll plant a farm, create a treasure stone, come up close and personal with a fish, and maybe see a few more animals along the way.~ Jump at this chance to trek the Australian continent.~ Crickey!

Battle of the Books:
Battle of the Books is a state wide competition for Fifth Graders.  This year I am excited to be coaching this team.  Following is a list of requirements in order to attend the Battle of the Books meetings.  All meetings will take place during school hours.
a.      Take notes on each book you read and store them in a folder.  If you have already read some of the books, you must re-read or skim through the books to refresh your memory and allow you to jot down notes.
b.      Read 20 books and score a 70% or above on the AR test by September 19.  This will be your acceptance into the program.  You may you’re your notes for the AR tests, unless you want to use it for a grade for the 5th grade teachers.  There will also be a pizza party to celebrate the start of a great team.  If you have already taken an AR test on a BOB book, that counts.  Just tell me and I can look up the score from previous years.
c.      Read the rest of the 20 books and score a 70% or above on the AR test by March 30.
