Title 1 Reading

Recent News
Most reading groups have been formed and are well underway.  Our format is different this year with our new reading series, Reading Streets, by Scott Foresman.  We are team teaching small reading groups within the classroom reading block to assist the classroom teachers in managing the number of small groups they have.  If your child is in Title reading this year, it is a true "second dose" of reading - outside of their reading block and at a different time of the day.  We are using the intervention program, My Sidewalks, which is designed to compliment the new reading series and we are already seeing some remarkable results.  The students are making the connections to their reading block lessons with enthusiasm and great interest.  They are enjoying the extra attention on skills, vocabulary words, and additional time to practice reading in a small group setting.  1st, 2nd & 3rd graders have been bringing home decodable books (paper copies) to keep at home and practice their word attack skills.  Please listen to those little books and ask about their day.  Your support each evening makes a huge difference!

"There are many little ways to enlarge your child's world.  Love of books is the best of all."
Jacqueline Kennedy

Research by Sally Shaywitz, Overcoming Dyslexia (2003):
Less than 1 minute a day exposes a reader to 8,000 words in a year...... BUT in 20 minutes a day a student encounters approximately 1.8 MILLION words per year!  A HUGE difference!

So, we strongly encourage you to make reading a daily habit...... remember to read with your child, read to your child, and have your child read to you each day.  YOUR support makes the difference in your child's reading achievement!
