Message from the Principal

August 4, 2010

Dear Skyway Family,

Welcome to the 2010/2011 school year at the best school I’ve had the opportunity to
work--Skyway Elementary.  I am so excited about this school year, and all the possibilities it holds.  I hope you had a fun-filled, relaxing summer break.  My family had a wonderful summer, although we went on separate trips this summer.  My wife and two daughters went to Wisconsin for a week for a gymnastics camp.  My oldest son was a Counselor in Training at the same camp we take our 6th grade students to every May--Blue Mountain Ranch.  I can’t believe he’s going to be a senior this year.  I took my 8th grade son on a two week camping trip through Yellowstone, Montana, Idaho, Washington and Oregon.  We spent a few days in Westport, WA, fishing for salmon.  My son out-fished me, and won’t let me forget it.  It was such an amazing trip getting to spend so much precious time with only one child.  We saw some amazing country throughout our trip.
The 55 year old Skyway building is looking great!  Our Building Manager, Mark, and our night custodian, Robert, worked extremely hard this summer to get everything back to where it is supposed to be, touch up the paint where needed and make sure the facility is ready for the kids.  It always looks so great on the first day of school, and I know the kids like to return to a sparkling clean building.
We have a few new people joining us this year.  David Dillard joins us as a 6th grade teacher.  Lynn Wilson will be our new Life Learning Lab teacher.  She will have a couple new people joining her class as para-professionals--Lisa Hall and Ramona Shepherd.  Jennifer Hackford, a parttime para professional last year joins us full time this year.  Barbara Potter is our new English Language Learner teacher.  Gary Nicholson joins us as our new Band Director.  Finally, Julie Gilliam will be our new Speech teacher.  I am so excited to have these people join our Skyway family.  They are dynamic people, and exceptional teachers.  Class lists will be hung  up on the window just outside the main office on August 16.
This summer was the first time Cheyenne Mountain School District did not host summer school classes, so we opened our Library every Tuesday for anyone who wanted to come in for story time, study for the Battle of the Books competition in 5th grade, read a book or magazine, take an Accelerated Reader quiz, or just hang out for a while. We had a great turnout every week.  We had “Guest Readers” who left clues the week before they read, so visitors would have to try to figure out who they were.  Thank you to everyone who joined us in our library this summer.  Thank you also to Pam Herr and Sharon Vogel who organized and ran the program.  We had several staff members who helped out most every week as well.  Our Superintendent even joined us one week to be a guest reader.  It was a huge success.
We have a few upcoming activities planned already.

**  August 18--New Family Orientation--4:00-5:00pm

**  August 26--Back to School Night--6:30-8:00pm

Skyway, what a great place to grow.  See you on August 17th at the Ice Cream Social.

Sincerely,
Pat Webster
